As soon as you have realized that you are in a
serious predicament, the clock starts. How
you act in the first hour can make all the
difference.

Step 1  WHAT ARE YOUR IMEDIATE NEEDS?
If your dealing with an injury to yourself or
someone else of course that takes precedence.
Your needs after that most likely be determined
by weather conditions. In cold and rainy
situations you'll need to seek cover first. Then sit
think and evaluate.

Step 2   GET YOUR BEARINGS
Find where North South East and West are. If
you planned your trek as in Lesson 2, you might
have a good idea of where certain landmarks,
roads or towns are in the area.

Step 3. KNOW YOUR TIME LIMITATIONS
If you have some idea of the direction you need
to go for safety, you have to decide if you have
enough time to get  there. If night fall is only a
couple hours away you might be better off
spending your time obtaining a good shelter or
building a fire.
BE REALISTIC! You may want to
find a high location to get a better view of your
surroundings but don't waste time. Once you've
evaluated you situation its time to make a
decision on what course of action you'll take.
