| As soon as you have realized that you are in a serious predicament, the clock starts. How you act in the first hour can make all the difference. Step 1 WHAT ARE YOUR IMEDIATE NEEDS? If your dealing with an injury to yourself or someone else of course that takes precedence. Your needs after that most likely be determined by weather conditions. In cold and rainy situations you'll need to seek cover first. Then sit think and evaluate. Step 2 GET YOUR BEARINGS Find where North South East and West are. If you planned your trek as in Lesson 2, you might have a good idea of where certain landmarks, roads or towns are in the area. Step 3. KNOW YOUR TIME LIMITATIONS If you have some idea of the direction you need to go for safety, you have to decide if you have enough time to get there. If night fall is only a couple hours away you might be better off spending your time obtaining a good shelter or building a fire. BE REALISTIC! You may want to find a high location to get a better view of your surroundings but don't waste time.
