TROOP 382 COMMUNICATOR
Now that 2012 has begun, we are starting a very exciting year including our latest high adventure. We
are also entering a new era for the Old Portage District in that we are partnering with another troop on our
high adventure trip. Some members of Troop 390 in Fairlawn will be joining us as we head to Ely
Minnesota for some canoeing and fishing. The area we are heading to is the Boundry Waters Canoe
Area that is part of the Superior National Forest. We are looking at 6 days on the water in one of the most
beautiful areas of the United States. This will be a trip that the boys will never forget.
On March 6th, we will have our next Court of Awards. The boys will receive any merit badges and ranks
they earned since our last event. We will have a dinner at 6:30 PM at the Scout Hall. The troop will
provide the main course and we ask each family to bring a covered dish to share with everyone. The side
dishes are as follows; last names A-K bring deserts and L-Z bring vegetables and side dishes. The boys
should verify the awards they expect to get by 2/22.
We have two fundraising activities scheduled for the troop. One will be to benefit the Ely trip and the
second will be for troop operational expenses. We will be holding two fish fries this year, one on 3/16 and
3/30 both beginning at 4:00 PM in the Copley High School Commons.
As we look over the past year, I wanted to highlight a few things the troop accomplished. First we
welcomed 4 new Eagle Scouts to the roster of 382. We also provided community service for the Adopt-A-
Highway, Old Portage Klondike, Old Portage Pinewood Derby, Old Portage Day Camp, Eagle projects,
Halloween in the Park, Memorial Day Flags and the Memorial Day Parade. No other unit is as active in
their comm. Unity like Troop 382.
Earlier this month, the troop participated in the Old Portage Klondike. While we did not retain the
Camping Flag awarded to the first place unit, the boys performed very well and place 2nd amoung
traditional Boy Scout Troops. This year’s event was deep with Venturing units consisting of older scouts
that performed exceptionally well taking the top 3 spots. While the boys are disappointed, they should
hold their heads high knowing that we are still the troop to beat.

Scoutmasters Minute:
When the lead goose in formation gets tired, it rotates back in the V and another goose flies the point.
We should each take on the extra work of leading in our turn to benefit the group.
Scout meetings every Tuesday at Copley VFW 7:00-8:30 PM
